January’s Random Review Winner is Here!

Congratulations to Jena Hoffmeister, the winner of the Cool Tools Random Review Contest for January. Jena has won a $100 gift certificate for reviewing her Golden Topaz Lab Gemstones. Jena was excited about being the January winner:

“Thank You! This really is a wonderful surprise!

I started making and selling jewelry many years ago and have just recently gotten back into it. At the moment, I’m really loving Bronze Clay and the beautiful warm gold color of the finished pieces- I like to pair them with natural gemstones and leather.

I’m learning new things every day and I enjoy experimenting with and testing different products and techniques.

Thank you again!

Kind regards,

Jena”

“Wow!  Thank you!!!  I’m excited to be October’s winner.   I will definitely be using the gift certificate for buying PMC products.

Most of my jewelry making to date has been working with PMC; however I am expanding into some lapidary projects to incorporate into my PMC jewelry.  I’m a beginner with PMC but have found it very easy to work with even with little training other than videos and books.

Jewelry making is one of my retirement hobbies.   I enjoy making jewelry for family, friends and myself.

Thank you again for selecting me as the October winner.

“I was thrilled to learn that I was the July winner of the Cool Tools Review Contest! I love to order from Cool Tools, as they have great selections, prices, and service.

I’ve been taking PMC classes for about 1 1/2 years, and enjoy tremendously learning and exploring with it. Our PMC class is made up of incredibly friendly and talented women of all levels, from an artist new to PMC to our very knowledgeable teacher. I thought it would be fun to share the prize with everyone in the class, so all of us could celebrate together and enjoy something new. Thank you for this opportunity, Cool Tools!

I’m also learning to make dichroic glass jewelry, and I would like to combine these two mediums. I’ve never considered myself artistic before, so this is a whole new world for me, and I love it!

May’s Review Winner is Here!

Congratulations to Kathryn Richardson, the winner of the Cool Tools Random Review Contest. Kathryn has won a $100 gift certificate for reviewing the Slik she purchased. Kathryn gave our Slik a top 5-Star rating.

Kathryn was excited and told us a little about herself:

Kathryn Richardson“Wow! I really won something?! Perhaps now I can start prowling the Cool Tools pages for new goodies.”

Kathryn Richardson is a jewelry designer currently based in the Kansas City area. She designs jewelry with the stone in mind, enhancing the natural beauty of gemstones and pearls instead of hiding them under a tangle of coils and seed beads. Her pieces are made with solid metals – sterling silver, fine silver, and copper – or with vermeil and gold-filled components. Her designs often incorporate handcrafted accents in wire or metal clay. To add more sparkle, she adds Swarovski crystals to white topaz and faceted rock crystal to make original holiday jewelry.

She is fascinated by “the metamorphosis that changes a plain stone into a dazzling gem then into a radiant piece of jewelry. It takes the right combination of color, form, metal, and design.” A life long artist, she is familiar with the magical potential of color and contrast. She also has a passion for colored stones (her father always checked her pockets before heading home from vacation). She only began designing jewelry 15 years ago, selling her pieces in several galleries in the Midwest. She also created pieces inspired by the collection in the Nelson-Atkins Museum that were available only in the gift shop.

She teaches classes in basic stringing and simple wirework (“I teach students to wrap natural gemstones so the inherent beauty of the stone comes through.”). She also holds stringing sessions for a local women’s group. Out of the studio, she is an avid photographer, inquisitive explorer, experienced gardener, and scuba diver.

February’s Review Winner Has Arrived

Congratulations to Alice Roberts, the winner of the Cool Tools Random Review Contest. Alice has won a $100 gift certificate for reviewing the Cool Tools Antique Mold: ‘Star of India’ she purchased. Alice gave the Antique Mold a top 5-Star rating and said ” The design is very beautiful and will add great detail to any jewelry project”.

Alice was excited and told us a little about herself:

“What a surprise!  I cannot believe I actually won something! I’m so excited about choosing how to spend my gift certificate! I’ll be torn whether to buy more molds, or tools, I love the antique molds and I’m looking forward to using all the goodies I bought from you last time.

My crafting takes many forms. I like doing wire wrapped jewelry, making necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pendants and rings with wire and beads, and semi-precious gemstones.  I make several types of jewelry, things with natural products, like sea shells, coral, pearls, and gemstone beads, and pendants or focals. I also use crystals and lamp-worked glass beads, but rather than stringing everything, mostly I use Sterling Silver, and the non-tarnish sterling, Argentium, gold-filled, silver-filled wire, and I also use Bronze, Brass and Copper in some of my newest creations.  I love to use Cloisionne beads and focals, along with other beads.  I have just begun using the polymer clay, and the various types of metal clay to work on a separate collection for those.   I have taken DVD courses from various sources on different techniques, and have enjoyed learning to work with wire, gemstones, beads, metals and other items.  I am continuously learning more and more techniques.

As a lifetime self-taught crafter, I have done many projects in decorative painting, grapevine wreaths, decorations for business and for homes, bazaars, craft fairs, and participated in fundraisers.  I have always liked working and making things with my hands.  As a child, I learned embroidery, and other crafts, like crochet, etc.  As an adult I took Ceramics for several years, making many decorative gifts for family, and friends, and  decorative painting classes in the Priscilla Hauser method of decorative painting, and studied many other artists techniques as well in oils, and acrylics.  I enjoy painting on things like a wooden chest and discarded metal street signs, mailboxes, and other items and have done a couple of murals for my grandson’s bedroom at his home, and ours.  I make items that are usually one of a kind, or a small quantity of items, which are a bit different with the same materials, but mostly I do not make exactly the same thing more than once unless it is a custom order.

I am a native Floridian, transplanted in retirement to southern Georgia, where we love living on a fishing lake in a peaceful neighborhood.  This environment is very inspirational. We love watching the waterfowl, and migrating birds, humming birds, and doves, and other wildlife constantly on the lake and on the banks of our back yard.”

February’s Survey Winner Is Here!

Congratulations to Donna Muse, the winner of the February Cool Tools Survey Contest. Donna has won a $100 gift certificate simply for offering us her thoughts.

Donna was excited and told us a little about herself:

“Thanks a million-very excited to win and can’t wait to shop.

I am a 5th grade teacher of highly gifted students and got into jewelry making in the fall of 2011 by accident. I had seen some bookmarks made from beads and thought it would be an inexpensive but fun gift to make (little did I know what this would lead to). I was already making Alice In Wonderland crafts for my classroom and had a business, Down the Rabbit Hole. The bookmarks led to beading and Steampunk necklaces for my young family members and then, not satisfied with doing just that, I decided I wanted to make my own findings and focal pieces.

I now do silversmithing with Dan Haga in Matthews, NC, have done the copper with Kim St. Jean, and dabble in polymer and metal clay.

I am 61 years old and will need to teach until I drop over to pay for this “hobby” which I love, and finding most rewarding.”

June’s Review Winner is Here

Congratulations to Neda Heeter, the winner of the Cool Tools Random Review Contest. Neda has won a $100 gift certificate for reviewing the Cool Tools Patina Gel she purchased. Neda gave the Patina Gel a top 5-Star rating and called it ” Easy to Use”.

Neda was excited and told us a little about herself:

Making jewelry is a very, very new hobby for me.  I took one class this spring in Clay Jewelry at our local museum- The Vero Beach Museum of Art- with an excellent teacher, Linda Kline. Unfortunately, there were not enough students signed up for the next set of classes (I live in a seasonal community) so they were suspended until November. I can’t wait for them to resume so I can continue my adventure.

I am not an “artist” but I love jewelry and I had been several times encouraged to try my hand at this class. I had finished a difficult year with the illness and subsequent death of my mom as well as having just completed the second of chairing a major fundraising event for the Homeless Family Center in our town. It felt like a good time to explore a new hobby.

While my “creations” are not particularly unique or special, I find the process extremely relaxing.

Winning the June random drawing was quite a surprise. The gift certificate will help me buy more materials for my new hobby.

Thank you Cool Tools for my $100 gift certificate. I can’t wait to use it.

Attached is a photo of me from my 60th birthday party which I celebrated by holding a party for all the residents of the Homeless Family Center. I’m wearing earrings that I made.
