Sea Serpent by Carol Douglas

Written by Diane Rein

Carol is a sculptor living in the New Forest in England. She takes her inspiration from the myths and legends of the land and sea surrounding her and would like to share some of her work with FS999™ Fine Silver Clay.
There are many different methods to produce different effects and Carol often experiments rather than always doing things in a conventional way. If you would like to try experimenting with some of these methods yourself she is happy to give you some tips and share with you how she has accomplished several of her pieces. Simply reach out to Cool Tools and we will forward her contact information. Carol always thinks in pictures and stories. Each of her creations has their own story to tell.

This particular sea serpent has its own story Carol has shared with us. It goes….

The little crescent shape flexed and wriggled as it waxed into being. His egg tooth, now strong enough, slashed it’s way out of the leathery covering and he dived instinctively to depths that would normally crush bone and sinew.
There was safety below and from this vantage point he could gain strength and ability.
His destiny was mapped out in his genes. He would become the next keeper of the Dark Waters. He would be the watcher, protecting the Guardian Fields until his very last breath.
Each of his uniquely shaded charges lying there, ever growing, had a different destiny all of its’ own. Coming to the depths on that magical night when special alignments had created the necessary conditions for her majesty, in all her full faced, blue tinged glory to bestow her gifts of gleaming tears.
The oysters on hearing the call had made their way to the surface
and each one of them had accepted a single shimmering moon beam and had returned to the depths to weave their own magic to create the most potent and beautiful treasures of the deep.
So now my children it is up to the Sea Serpent and his Sirena to keep them safe.

Below are some pictures of her working on this piece. You can see how flexible and carve-able FS999 is in the greenware state!
